What size bed does a French Bulldog need?

Most adult French Bulldogs fit comfortably on a small to medium dog bed, typically somewhere in the 60-75cm length range, but the breed's stocky, broad-chested build means two Frenchies of the same height can need noticeably different widths. Measuring your own dog, rather than buying on the breed name alone, is the part that actually gets the size right.

How to measure your Frenchie for a bed

Measure your dog from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail while they're standing naturally, then add roughly 15-20cm to that figure to give them room to stretch out and turn around comfortably. Do this with a fabric tape measure rather than a rigid ruler, since it follows the curve of their body more accurately.

Measure width separately rather than assuming a standard ratio. A French Bulldog's chest is proportionally broader than many breeds of a similar length, so a bed sized purely on nose-to-tail length can still feel tight when they curl up or lie on their side.

Reading a bed's size label

Bed sizing isn't standardised across brands, so 'medium' from one manufacturer can be noticeably different from another's. Check the actual dimensions given for the specific bed rather than relying on the size name, and compare them directly against the measurement you took.

For a dog who mostly curls up rather than stretching out flat, a slightly smaller bed with raised, bolstered sides can actually suit them better than a larger flat mattress, since it gives them something to lean into. A dog who stretches out fully needs the longer flat option instead, so it's worth watching how your own dog naturally sleeps before choosing the shape.

Common questions

Do French Bulldogs need an orthopaedic bed?
Not necessarily, but many older Frenchies or those with joint stiffness benefit from extra support underfoot. A supportive, well-padded bed is a reasonable choice for any French Bulldog and becomes more worth prioritising as they age or if a vet has flagged joint concerns.
Should a French Bulldog's bed have raised sides?
It depends on how your dog sleeps. Dogs who like to curl up and lean against something often prefer a bolstered bed with raised edges, while dogs who stretch out flat tend to do better on a simple, flat mattress-style bed with plenty of length.
How many beds does a French Bulldog need around the house?
That's entirely down to preference rather than a rule, though many owners find having a bed both downstairs and in the bedroom reduces the temptation to commandeer the sofa. What matters more than the number is that each one is properly sized for your dog.
Can a French Bulldog overheat on the wrong bed?
Frenchies are a flat-faced breed and can struggle to regulate their temperature, so a bed in a warm spot or made from a heavily insulated fabric can make them uncomfortably hot. A breathable fabric and a cooler spot in the room are worth considering alongside getting the size right.
