How much should a poodle weigh?

There's no single healthy weight for "a poodle", because Poodles come in genuinely different recognised sizes — Standard, Miniature and Toy — with very different expected adult weights. Knowing which variety your dog is, rather than looking for one flat figure, is the useful starting point.

Why the answer depends on which poodle you mean

A Standard Poodle is a substantial dog, generally well over 20kg fully grown, while a Toy Poodle is a small companion breed typically only a few kilograms. A Miniature Poodle sits between the two. Treating all three as one breed for weight purposes gives a meaningless answer, since the range across the varieties is enormous.

Breed standards for Poodles are typically expressed in terms of height at the shoulder for each variety rather than a single fixed weight, which is part of why individual healthy weights vary quite a bit even within the same size category, depending on build.

Reading a weight chart properly

A weight chart is most useful as a way of tracking a trend, not judging a single reading against a number. Weigh your puppy regularly, using the same scales where possible, and look at whether the trend follows a steady upward curve rather than comparing one weigh-in in isolation to a generic chart.

Comparing your puppy against others of the same variety and, ideally, the same sex gives a far more useful picture than a single average figure for "poodles" as a whole. A vet or an experienced breeder is a better source for what's expected of your specific puppy than any general chart.

Common questions

What's a healthy weight for a Standard Poodle?
Standard Poodles are the largest of the three varieties, generally well into the tens of kilograms as adults, though the exact figure varies with an individual dog's build. A vet can assess whether your specific dog is a healthy weight for their frame rather than height alone.
How much should a Miniature Poodle weigh?
Miniature Poodles sit between the Standard and Toy varieties in size, and the exact weight for an individual dog depends on their particular build and lines. Tracking your own puppy's growth trend against a vet's assessment is more useful than a single fixed target figure.
Why is my Poodle bigger or smaller than the chart I found online?
General charts often don't specify which Poodle variety they're describing, which can make an individually healthy dog look wrong against the wrong reference. Checking your dog's growth trend, and their variety specifically, with a vet gives a far more reliable answer.
