How much should a whippet weigh?

A healthy adult whippet typically sits somewhere between about 9kg and 19kg, with males usually heavier than females — but that's a wide range on purpose, because a well-bred whippet can be a slight, narrow dog or a sturdier, more heavily built one and both are normal for the breed.

Why the range is so wide

Whippets are bred across a spectrum from show-standard build to working and racing lines, and that difference shows up on the scale. A narrow-chested show-type whippet and a stockier working-bred one can differ by several kilos and both be a healthy weight for their own frame.

That's why breed weight charts are only ever a starting point. Height at the shoulder, bone structure and sex all move the number, so two whippets of the same age can have quite different healthy weights without either of them being wrong.

Reading your own dog rather than a chart

Body condition matters more than a figure on a chart. On a whippet at a healthy weight you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of covering, see a clear waist tucking up behind the ribcage from above, and see some tuck when viewed from the side.

Whippets naturally look lean compared with many breeds, which throws owners off — a visible waist and easily felt ribs are normal here, not a sign the dog is underweight. What you're watching for is a sudden change either way, not the breed's naturally slim look.

Puppies and growth

Whippet puppies grow quickly in the first year and then fill out more slowly afterwards, so weight at four months tells you very little about adult size. Littermates can also grow at noticeably different rates and both end up a healthy adult weight.

Steady, gradual growth without sudden gains or plateaus is the useful thing to watch, rather than trying to match a puppy to a chart figure for their exact age. A vet or breeder familiar with the line is better placed to say whether growth looks right for that individual dog.

Common questions

Is my whippet underweight if I can see its ribs?
Not necessarily. Whippets are a naturally lean breed and easily felt ribs under a thin covering, with a visible waist, is the normal healthy look for the breed rather than a sign of being underweight.
Why do two whippets the same age weigh so differently?
Build varies a lot within the breed, from slighter show-type lines to sturdier working-bred ones, and height and sex both affect healthy weight too — a wide range is normal rather than a sign something is wrong.
Should I weigh my whippet regularly?
It's a reasonable habit, mainly to catch a steady unexplained change in either direction early. A single number matters far less than the trend over weeks and months and how the dog looks and feels alongside it.
When should I get my whippet's weight checked by a vet?
If weight changes noticeably without a change in diet or exercise, or if you're unsure whether your dog's build is healthy, a vet can assess body condition properly rather than relying on a general chart alone.
