How much should a Rottweiler weigh?
An adult Rottweiler typically weighs somewhere between 35kg and 60kg, with males usually at the heavier end of that range and females lighter, though healthy weight varies by build and height within the breed. The number on a scale matters less than how your individual dog carries it.
Popular with Rottweiler owners: front-clip walking harnesses, anxiety beds for dogs and supportive dog beds.
Reading the typical range
Breed weight ranges are broad because they cover a lot of individual variation in height, bone structure and build within what is still recognisably the same breed. A tall, heavily built male sitting near the top of the range can be just as healthy as a smaller female near the bottom.
Growth is not linear either. Rottweiler puppies grow quickly through their first year and can continue filling out in muscle and frame until around two to three years old, so a young adult weight is not necessarily their final adult weight.
Why body condition matters more than the number
Two Rottweilers at the same weight can look and be in quite different condition depending on their height and frame, which is why vets generally assess body condition — feeling for ribs, looking for a waist from above — alongside or instead of a weight figure alone.
If you are ever unsure whether your Rottweiler is a healthy weight, a body condition check with your vet is far more informative than comparing their weight to a general breed range on its own.
Common questions
- How much should a male Rottweiler weigh?
- Adult males typically sit toward the upper part of the breed's overall range, often between around 50kg and 60kg, though this varies with individual height and build. Your vet can assess whether your dog's specific weight is appropriate for their frame.
- How much should a female Rottweiler weigh?
- Adult females are generally lighter than males, often somewhere between around 35kg and 48kg, though again this varies by individual build. Body condition matters more than hitting a specific number within that range.
- At what age is a Rottweiler fully grown?
- Most Rottweilers reach their adult height within the first year or so but can continue to fill out in muscle and frame until around two to three years old, so weight can still be settling well into early adulthood.
- How do I know if my Rottweiler is overweight?
- Feel for their ribs without needing to press hard, and look for a visible waist from above. If ribs are difficult to feel or the waist has disappeared, it is worth discussing weight management with your vet rather than guessing.
