Dog Slip Leads
A slip lead is collar and lead in one: quick to put on, difficult to forget and useful when a dog needs moving safely in seconds. The right stopper and thickness matter more than the colour.

Which slip lead should you choose?
| Use | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quick everyday walks | Soft rope with an adjustable stopper | The stopper prevents the loop opening too far when the lead goes slack. |
| Wet or muddy ground | Easy-clean polypropylene or nylon | It absorbs less water and can be rinsed after the walk. |
| Strong or sudden pullers | A wider lead with a padded handle | A broader loop and cushioned grip spread pressure more comfortably. |
Fit the stopper before the first walk
The moving stopper sits behind the dog’s ears and limits how far the loop can open. Set it close enough that the dog cannot reverse out, while still leaving the lead loose when they are walking without tension.
A slip lead tightens when a dog pulls, so it is not the best everyday choice for a dog with breathing, neck or trachea problems. A correctly fitted harness is the safer answer there.
A useful tool, not a training shortcut
Slip leads are popular with gundog handlers, kennels and vets because they go on quickly. They still depend on calm lead handling and reward-based training; constant tension teaches very little and makes the walk uncomfortable.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
Can a dog escape from a slip lead?
Yes, if the stopper is left too loose. Set it behind the ears so the loop cannot open wide enough to pass back over the head, and check it again during the walk.
Are slip leads suitable for puppies?
They can be used briefly and gently, but a light harness is usually kinder while a puppy is learning and protects the neck from sudden lunges.
Which side should the ring sit on?
Fit it so the lead loosens immediately when tension is released. If it stays tight after the dog stops pulling, reverse the loop.
