Dog Puzzle Toys
Snuffle mats, treat puzzles and brain games that tire a dog out through their nose and head — often more effective than another lap of the park.
Pick by how your dog likes to work. Snuffle mats suit nose-led dogs and slow down a meal at the same time; treat balls and dispensers suit dogs who like to roll and chase; sliding and flip-lid puzzles such as the Nina Ottosson range come in difficulty levels, so a clever dog can move up as it learns. Lick mats calm rather than challenge. Start with something easy enough to win in the first minute, supervise until you know how your dog treats it, and give a strong chewer a natural-rubber treat toy rather than a fabric or plastic puzzle. Our guide to puzzle toys for clever dogs sorts them by difficulty.

Why mental exercise tires dogs out
Sniffing and problem-solving are surprisingly hard work. Ten minutes of nose-work can leave a dog as content as a much longer walk.
Enrichment is a lifesaver on rainy days, during recovery from injury, or for high-energy dogs who struggle to settle.
Building up the difficulty
Start easy so your dog wins quickly and stays motivated, then move on to trickier puzzles as their confidence grows.
Supervise the first few sessions and put puzzles away between uses so they stay novel and exciting.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions
Are puzzle toys good for anxious dogs?
Calm, rewarding nose-work can genuinely help a dog decompress. It’s a great everyday tool, though it’s not a replacement for professional help with serious anxiety.
How long do they keep a dog busy?
Anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the puzzle and your dog. Rotating a few keeps them interesting.
Can puppies use them?
Yes — start with the simplest designs and supervise, especially with young chewers.
Which puzzle toy should I start with?
A snuffle mat or a simple treat ball. Both reward a dog almost straight away, which keeps them keen. Once your dog empties it in a couple of minutes, move on to a sliding or flip-lid puzzle with a stated difficulty level and work up from the easiest.
Are puzzle toys safe for strong chewers?
Only with supervision. A fabric snuffle mat or a plastic puzzle board is a thinking toy, not a chew toy, and a determined chewer can tear or crack one. Give strong chewers a natural-rubber treat dispenser instead, put puzzles away after each session, and replace anything that starts to break up.
