Start with what your dog will actually wear
Most dogs tolerate something across the back far better than anything over the head or around the legs. If yours has never worn clothing, a cape or a jumper is a much safer first choice than a full-body costume with a hood.
Let them wear it indoors for a few minutes before the night itself, with a treat or two. A dog who has met the costume once is a great deal easier to photograph than one being introduced to it on the doorstep with the bell going.
Trick-or-treat night is loud
A costume plus a doorbell ringing every ten minutes is a lot to ask of a nervous dog. If yours already struggles with the door, skip the costume and put the effort into a quiet room at the back of the house with the television on.
For dogs who are fine with it, dark costumes and late-October evenings are a poor combination on a walk. Several costumes here are luminous or glow in the dark, which is genuinely useful rather than just a gimmick.

Common questions
Is it safe to put my pet in a costume?
For short, supervised periods, yes. A costume must never restrict breathing, sight, hearing or movement, must have nothing small enough to chew off and swallow, and should never be left on an unattended pet — including overnight or during rough play. If your pet freezes, flattens their ears, or tries to back out of it, take it off and try a bandana instead.
How do I get the size right?
Measure three things while your pet is standing: neck circumference, chest at the widest point just behind the front legs, and back length from the collar to the base of the tail. Chest is the measurement that decides the size — if your pet is between sizes, go up.
What if my dog hates wearing things?
Plenty do, and it is not worth forcing. A themed bandana or collar gets you the same photograph with none of the stress, and your dog will not spend the evening trying to reverse out of it.
Can they wear it on a walk?
For a short walk, if it does not restrict movement and you can see the harness and lead attachment clearly. Never clip a lead to a costume — always to a proper collar or harness underneath.
