Dog Dental Chews & Toothbrushes

Plaque hardens into tartar within days, and untreated it leads to gum disease, tooth loss and bacteria that can affect the heart, liver and kidneys. Bad breath isn’t just unpleasant — it’s usually the first sign something’s wrong in the mouth.

Brushing with a dog-specific (never human) toothpaste is the gold standard, but daily dental chews are the realistic backup that scrape the tooth surface and keep breath fresher between brushes.

Start slow: let your dog lick the paste off your finger, then off a finger-brush, before working up to a proper toothbrush. Aim for daily, but even a few times a week beats nothing.

Pick dental chews sized correctly for your dog — too small is a choking risk, too hard can crack a tooth. Look for ones with a texture designed to reach the gumline, and count them in their daily calories.

By the time there is visible tartar, a smell, or a dog eating on one side, the useful window for home care has largely passed — that stage needs a vet, and often a scale under anaesthetic. Chews maintain a clean mouth; they do not clean a dirty one.

Use a pet toothpaste and never a human one. Human toothpaste contains fluoride and frequently xylitol, which is toxic to dogs even in small amounts.
