Can budgies eat nuts?
Yes, budgies can eat small amounts of plain, unsalted nuts as an occasional treat. The important part is the word plain: no salt, no seasoning, no coating, and nothing showing any sign of mould, which is a genuine danger for birds rather than just an unpleasant taste.

Why plain matters more than the type
Nuts themselves aren't a specific danger to budgies in small amounts, but the way they're often sold for human snacking, salted, roasted with seasoning, or coated in flavouring, absolutely is. Salt in particular is harmful to birds in far smaller quantities than it would take to bother a person, so anything other than plain, unsalted nuts should be avoided.
Nuts are also high in fat relative to a budgie's small size, so even plain nuts are a treat to give sparingly rather than a food to offer freely, however much a budgie enjoys them.
Why mould is a genuine risk
Certain nuts, peanuts in particular, can carry a mould that produces a toxin harmful to birds if the nut has started to spoil, even in ways that aren't obvious to look at. Buying fresh, good quality nuts and checking them before offering any to your budgie matters more here than with most other treats.
If a nut looks discoloured, smells off, or has any visible mould, don't offer it, and don't offer any others from the same batch either, since the issue may not be limited to the one nut you happened to spot.
How much and how often
A small piece of nut, chopped down from whole, once or twice a week at most, is a sensible amount for a budgie. This is a treat on top of a proper seed or pellet-based diet, not something to offer daily or in any real quantity.
Introduce a new type of nut gradually and watch how your budgie gets on with it, the same as you would with any new food, and remove any uneaten piece from the cage promptly since fatty foods can spoil or attract insects if left sitting.
What to watch for afterwards
Most budgies tolerate a small piece of plain nut without any issue, but keep an eye on droppings and general behaviour for a day or so after offering anything new, the same as you would with any unfamiliar food.
If your budgie seems unwell, stops eating their usual food, or you're at all unsure whether a nut you've offered was fresh enough, speak to a vet experienced with birds rather than waiting to see whether things settle on their own.
Fitting nuts into a wider diet
Nuts are one of a number of occasional extras owners use to add variety to a budgie's diet, alongside fresh fruit and vegetables offered a little at a time. None of these are meant to make up a significant share of what a budgie eats day to day.
A good quality seed mix or pellet food, chosen for budgies specifically, should remain the foundation of the diet, with nuts and other treats kept genuinely occasional. That balance matters more for a bird's long-term health than any single treat food does on its own.

Common questions
- Which nuts are safe for budgies?
- Plain, unsalted almonds, walnuts and similar nuts, chopped into small pieces, are generally fine as an occasional treat. Avoid anything salted, roasted with seasoning, sugar-coated, or that shows any sign of mould or spoilage.
- Are peanuts safe for budgies?
- Plain, unsalted peanuts can be given occasionally, but they're one of the nuts most prone to carrying a mould toxin if not stored and handled properly, so freshness and quality matter more here than with most other nuts.
- Can nuts make a budgie fat?
- Yes, if given too often or in too large a quantity, since nuts are quite high in fat and calories relative to a budgie's small size. Keep portions small and infrequent, treating nuts as an occasional extra rather than a regular part of the diet.
- Should I give my budgie the nut shell too?
- No, offer just the nut itself, shelled and chopped small. Shells aren't part of a normal diet for a budgie and can be a choking hazard given their size and texture.
