Can budgies eat oats?
Yes, budgies can eat oats. Plain porridge oats, cooked with water and left to cool, or a few whole oat groats mixed into their usual seed, make a safe and reasonably nutritious addition to a budgie's diet. The main things to avoid are added sugar, salt, milk or flavourings, none of which a budgie needs.

Why oats are a decent option for budgies
Oats provide fibre and some protein, and many budgie owners use a small amount of cooked porridge oats as an occasional change from the usual seed mix or as part of a wider effort to widen a budgie's diet beyond seed alone. They are not a replacement for a proper seed or pellet-based diet, but they make a reasonable addition alongside it.
Whole, uncooked oat groats can also be offered as part of a seed mix, since budgies are used to husking and working at seeds and grains as part of their natural feeding behaviour, which also gives them something to do.
How to prepare and serve oats
If cooking porridge oats, use plain water only, with nothing added, and let the oats cool fully before offering a small amount on a dish. Remove anything left uneaten within a few hours, since cooked oats can spoil quickly, especially in a warm room, and a budgie's cage should not become a place where old food sits around.
Avoid instant or flavoured porridge sachets, which usually contain sugar, salt or artificial flavouring, and never add milk, honey or sweeteners to oats intended for a budgie - plain is genuinely all that is needed.
How much and how often
A small teaspoon-sized amount a few times a week is plenty as an addition to a budgie's regular diet, which should still be based on a good quality seed or pellet mix formulated for budgies, topped up with appropriate fresh vegetables.
If you notice any change in your budgie's droppings, appetite or behaviour after introducing oats or any new food, stop offering it and speak to an avian-experienced vet, since birds can hide illness well and small changes are worth taking seriously.
Other foods worth knowing about alongside oats
Oats are just one way to add variety to a budgie's diet - small amounts of finely chopped fresh vegetables such as carrot, broccoli or spinach, offered a few times a week, are another good way to broaden what your budgie eats beyond seed alone, alongside the occasional millet spray as a treat.
Whatever you introduce, do it one food at a time and in small amounts, so if your budgie's droppings or behaviour change, you can work out what caused it. A varied diet built up slowly is safer than several new foods offered all at once.

Common questions
- Can budgies eat raw oats straight from the packet?
- Plain, dry oat groats can be offered as part of a seed mix, since budgies are well suited to husking and working at whole grains. Just make sure they are plain oats with nothing added, rather than a flavoured or sweetened cereal product.
- Can baby budgies have oats?
- It is better to stick to their parents' or breeder's established feeding routine while they are very young, and only introduce new foods like cooked oats once a budgie is independently eating and settled onto solid food. Ask an avian-experienced vet if you are unsure when to start.
- Is porridge safe for budgies if I add a little honey?
- It is better left out. Budgies do not need added sugar of any kind, and honey specifically is also better avoided because of a small risk of bacterial contamination that is more of a concern for birds than it is for people. Plain oats and water is the safer version.
- What other grains can budgies eat?
- Millet, in the form of a millet spray, is a well known and popular treat for budgies, and small amounts of cooked brown rice or wholemeal pasta are sometimes offered too. Introduce anything new gradually and in small amounts, watching how your budgie responds.
- Can budgies eat oatmeal cookies or granola bars?
- No - these products usually contain sugar, salt, chocolate, raisins or other added ingredients that are not suitable for a budgie, even though they are based on oats. Stick to plain cooked or dry oats prepared at home rather than any processed oat product made for people.
