Can budgies eat cashews?

Budgies can technically eat a small piece of plain cashew, but it is not a good regular treat — nuts are high in fat for a bird this size, and a whole cashew is a genuine choking risk worth avoiding altogether.

Why cashews are a poor fit for a budgie's diet

A budgie weighs around 30 to 40 grams, and a single cashew is disproportionately fatty and calorie-dense for a bird that size — what looks like a small treat to us is a substantial amount of fat relative to a budgie's whole daily intake. Fed regularly, this kind of fat load can contribute to obesity and liver problems in a bird that small.

There is also a mechanical risk. A whole or large piece of cashew is hard and an awkward shape for a budgie's small beak and throat to manage safely, and salted or flavoured cashews carry the additional problem of far too much sodium for a bird this size.

If you do offer any

Only ever offer a plain, unsalted cashew, broken into a genuinely tiny piece — a sliver rather than anything resembling a whole nut — and only very occasionally, not as a regular part of the diet. A piece any bigger than a small seed is more nut than a budgie this size needs in one sitting.

Watch your budgie while they eat anything new, and remove any uneaten pieces from the cage promptly, since fatty foods left sitting in a cage can spoil faster than seed or pellets, and a budgie that returns to a stale piece later is at more risk than one offered it fresh the first time.

Why the fat adds up faster than it looks

A budgie's everyday diet, whether that's a seed mix or a formulated pellet, is already balanced to give them what they need without extra fat on top. Seed mixes in particular already carry a meaningful amount of fat from the seeds themselves, so a fatty extra like a cashew is adding to a diet that is not short of fat to begin with, rather than filling a genuine gap.

A budgie carrying too much weight is harder to spot than it is in a larger pet, since feathers hide body shape well. A vet or an experienced bird keeper can check body condition by feel along the breastbone, which is a more reliable guide than appearance alone for a bird this size.

Better treats for a budgie

Budgies do well with small amounts of fresh vegetables like broccoli or spinach, or a little fruit such as apple with the seeds removed, given as an occasional supplement to a good-quality seed or pellet mix rather than nuts.

Millet spray is a widely used, budgie-appropriate treat that gives the enjoyment of something extra without the fat load of a nut, and treat sticks made specifically for budgies and small birds are formulated with this in mind, giving variety without the same fat concentration as a nut.

Common questions

Are cashews poisonous to budgies?
Cashews are not classed as toxic to budgies in the way some foods are, but they are a poor dietary choice because of their high fat content relative to a budgie's small size, and a whole cashew is also a choking risk. It is best avoided as a regular treat.
What nuts are safe for budgies?
Small amounts of plain, unsalted almonds or walnuts, broken into tiny pieces, are sometimes given as an occasional treat, but all nuts are high in fat relative to a budgie's size and should be given sparingly if at all.
What should I do if my budgie ate a whole cashew?
Watch your budgie closely for any signs of distress, difficulty breathing, or trouble swallowing, since a whole cashew is a genuine size risk for a bird this small. If your budgie seems unwell or is struggling, contact a vet promptly.
What treats are best for budgies?
Millet spray, small amounts of fresh vegetables like broccoli, and treat sticks made specifically for budgies are all better everyday options than nuts, giving variety without the fat load that comes with something like a cashew.
How can I tell if my budgie is overweight?
It is harder to judge by eye than with many pets, since feathers hide body shape. A vet or an experienced bird keeper can check body condition by feeling gently along the breastbone, which is a more reliable guide than appearance alone, and is worth doing periodically if your budgie regularly has fatty treats.
