Can budgies eat celery?

Yes, budgies can eat celery, offered in small, finely chopped pieces as an occasional addition alongside their main seed or pellet diet. It isn't toxic, but the stringy fibres in the stalk are worth removing first, since they can catch in a budgie's throat or crop more easily than the vegetable itself would cause harm.

Why celery is a reasonable extra

Celery is mostly water, which makes it a hydrating, low-calorie addition to a budgie's diet rather than a significant source of nutrition on its own. Offering small amounts of vegetables like celery alongside a good quality seed or pellet mix gives a budgie some variety and something to investigate, which matters for a bird kept in a cage.

It shouldn't replace a proper seed or pellet diet, which is formulated to give a budgie the balance of nutrients they actually need — celery and other fresh vegetables are best thought of as a supplement to that, not a substitute for it.

How to prepare it safely

Wash the celery thoroughly and chop it into small pieces rather than offering a whole stick, which is both easier for a small bird to manage and reduces the risk of the stringy fibres catching in the throat or crop. Some owners prefer to peel the tougher strings away from the stalk before chopping, which further reduces that risk.

Introduce it in a very small amount the first time and watch how your budgie responds, the same as you would with any new food, and remove any uneaten fresh food from the cage after a few hours so it doesn't spoil.

How much and how often

A small piece once or twice a week is plenty. There's no need to offer celery daily, and doing so isn't more beneficial — variety across a few different safe vegetables tends to suit a budgie better than repeating the same one often.

If your budgie shows no interest in celery, that's completely normal and nothing to worry about; a seed or pellet-based diet with the right nutrients doesn't depend on any one fresh vegetable being accepted.

Fresh food and cage hygiene

Any fresh vegetable, celery included, should be removed from the cage after a few hours whether it's been eaten or not, since it can spoil quickly and attract pests if left sitting in a warm room. Wash the food dish regularly if you offer fresh vegetables often, rather than letting residue build up over several days.

It's also worth offering fresh food in a separate dish from seed or pellets, so the dry food doesn't get damp from contact with anything wet, which can cause it to spoil faster than it otherwise would.

Common questions

Do I need to remove the strings from celery before giving it to my budgie?
It's a sensible precaution. The stringy fibres in celery can catch in a small bird's throat or crop more easily than in a larger animal, so peeling or finely chopping the stalk reduces that risk.
Can budgies eat celery leaves as well as the stalk?
The leaves are generally treated the same way as the stalk — fine in small amounts, washed and chopped — though most owners focus on the stalk since that's the more commonly available part.
How much celery is too much for a budgie?
More than a small piece a couple of times a week isn't necessary and doesn't add extra benefit. Their main diet should still be a proper seed or pellet mix, with vegetables like celery as an occasional extra.
What other vegetables can I offer alongside celery?
Small amounts of cucumber, carrot and leafy greens are commonly offered to budgies in the same cautious, occasional way as celery, giving some variety across the week.
My budgie seems to be choking after eating celery — what should I do?
Remove any remaining celery immediately and watch your bird closely. If they seem distressed, are struggling to breathe, or don't recover quickly, contact an avian-experienced vet straight away rather than waiting.
Is organic celery safer for budgies than regular celery?
Washing thoroughly matters more than whether it's labelled organic — either type is fine as long as it's rinsed well before it's chopped and offered, since the main concern is any residue on the surface rather than the growing method itself.
