Best bed for a Great Dane
A Great Dane can weigh 50–90kg fully grown, which changes what a bed actually needs to do compared with a smaller dog's. Real support under bony pressure points like the hips and elbows, a footprint genuinely long enough for a dog that can stretch out to over a metre, and washable, sturdy covers all matter more here than they do for a dog a fraction of the size.
Why size and support matter more for a giant breed
A thin, unsupportive bed does very little for a dog this heavy, since the dog's own weight compresses cheap filling flat within weeks, leaving bony joints resting on a firm floor through a thin layer of fabric. A genuinely supportive, higher-density foam or orthopaedic-style bed holds its shape under much more weight than a standard bed is built for.
Measure your dog stretched out at full length, not curled up, since a Great Dane sleeping curled in a bed sized for a much smaller dog defeats the point of a supportive bed in the first place. Many owners find they need the largest bed size a range offers, or a bed specifically marketed for giant breeds.
Practical features worth prioritising
A removable, washable cover matters for any dog, but more so for a giant breed simply because there is more bed to wash and more surface area to keep clean. Raised or bolstered edges can help an older Great Dane get up more easily by giving them something to push against.
Non-slip bases are worth checking too — a large, heavy bed sliding across a hard floor as a big dog climbs in and out is both annoying and, over time, a way for the cover to wear through faster than it should.

Common questions
- What size bed does a Great Dane need?
- Measure your dog lying fully stretched out, nose to tail, and choose a bed at least that long so they can lie flat comfortably. Most standard dog bed sizes are too small for an adult Great Dane, so look specifically at extra-large or giant-breed sizing.
- Do Great Danes need an orthopaedic bed?
- Not every Great Dane needs a medical-grade orthopaedic bed, but a genuinely supportive, higher-density bed benefits any dog this heavy by reducing pressure on joints while resting. An older Great Dane or one with known joint concerns may benefit more, which is worth discussing with your vet.
- How often should I replace a Great Dane's bed?
- Check periodically for flattened filling that no longer springs back, torn seams, or a base that has lost its shape, since a giant breed's weight compresses a bed faster than it would for a smaller dog. There's no fixed replacement schedule, it depends on the bed's quality and how much use it gets.
