Loft and coop cleaning

Keeping a loft or coop clean is mostly about breaking the cycle that lets mites, bacteria and ammonia build up in bedding and perches. A regular housing spray or disinfectant, used alongside proper mucking out rather than instead of it, is what actually keeps a loft or coop pleasant to be in and safe for the birds living there.

What these products actually do

A poultry housing spray is generally aimed at treating perches, nest boxes and cracks where red mite and other parasites hide, rather than the whole floor area. A loft treatment for pigeons does a similar job in a different setting, targeting the same kind of parasite and bacterial build-up that a loft accumulates over a season.

A general disinfectant is the broader-spectrum option, used after a full clean-out to reduce bacteria and viruses on surfaces before fresh bedding goes back in. None of these replace physically removing droppings and old bedding — they work best on a surface that's already been mucked out.

Getting the routine right

A full clean-out with disinfectant is worth doing on a proper schedule rather than only when something looks visibly wrong — red mite in particular can build up for weeks before you notice a problem, by which point birds have already been affected. Between full clean-outs, spot-treating perches and nest boxes keeps the worst of it at bay.

Always let a treated surface dry fully before birds go back in, and follow the dilution and contact time on the product rather than guessing at it — using less than instructed is the most common way these products under-perform.

Common questions

How often should I clean out a pigeon loft?
A full clean-out is generally recommended at least once a week during the breeding season, with a more thorough deep clean between seasons. Daily removal of obvious droppings in between keeps the workload for the weekly clean much more manageable.
How do I know if I've got a red mite problem?
Red mite hide in cracks and crevices during the day and come out at night to feed, so you may see birds unsettled or reluctant to roost before you spot the mites themselves. Checking perches and nest box joints with a torch after dark is the most reliable way to catch it early.
Can I use the same disinfectant for pigeons and poultry?
Many general poultry and pigeon disinfectants are formulated for similar use, but always check the specific product label rather than assuming, since concentration and safe contact time can differ between products aimed at each. When in doubt, use the one specifically labelled for the birds you keep.
