Which rabbit housing do I actually need?
| Your situation | What to look for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two rabbits outdoors | Hutch plus an attached or adjoining run | A hutch alone is a bedroom, not a home |
| Rabbits living indoors | An open pen with the largest floor area you can fit | Floor space matters far more than height |
| Small patio or yard | A two-tier hutch with a ramp | Buys floor area back from a small footprint |
| Guinea pigs, not rabbits | A 100cm-plus cage with a deep tray | They need less height and far less headroom |
| Travel or visitors | A folding pen | Flattens for the car or behind a door |
How much space does a rabbit need?
More than almost any shop-bought hutch provides on its own. A rabbit should be able to take three consecutive hops without meeting a wall, and sit fully upright on its back legs with its ears clear of the roof — which rules out a surprising number of hutches sold as suitable for two rabbits.
That is why every hutch on this page carries an honest note about what it is really for. Some are proper homes. Several are excellent weatherproof shelters that need a run attached to them, and we would rather tell you which is which before you order than after.
Indoors or outdoors?
Outdoors needs weatherproofing that survives a British winter: a tilted roof so water runs off rather than sitting on the timber, a water-resistant finish, and a latch a fox cannot nose open. Raised legs matter too — cold and damp travel up through a floor sitting flat on grass.
Indoors, the priorities reverse. Weather stops mattering and floor area, easy cleaning and something the rabbit can chew safely become the whole decision. Open pens usually beat cages inside, because you can reach in from any side rather than through one small door.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions
Is a hutch on its own enough for a rabbit?
Usually not. Most hutches sold for one to two rabbits are best treated as sleeping and shelter space, paired with a run or a secured area of garden for several hours a day. We say so on the individual product pages where it applies.
Can rabbits and guinea pigs live together?
It is generally advised against. They have different dietary needs, communicate differently, and a rabbit can injure a guinea pig without meaning to. Most UK welfare organisations recommend keeping each species with its own kind.
What can rabbits eat?
Hay should be the bulk of the diet, with fresh greens and a small amount of pellets. We keep a food-by-food guide covering what is safe, what needs care and what to avoid entirely.
Do rabbits need a hutch cover in winter?
A cover helps against wind and driving rain, but never seal the hutch completely — rabbits need airflow, and trapped condensation causes more harm than cold does.
