Why puppy ears need a gentle approach
A puppy's ear canal is more delicate than an adult dog's, and the goal for most healthy puppies is simple maintenance — removing normal wax build-up and debris before it becomes a problem — rather than treating an active infection, which needs veterinary attention rather than a shop-bought cleaner.
Breeds with floppy ears, or naturally hairy or narrow ear canals, tend to need more regular attention because airflow to the ear canal is more restricted, creating a warmer, damper environment that debris and, eventually, infection can build up in more easily than in a breed with upright, open ears.

A cleaner formulated specifically for dogs, with a gentle pH-balanced solution rather than anything containing alcohol or strong chemicals, is the standard to look for. Puppies have more sensitive skin generally, and a product too harsh for a young ear can cause irritation rather than solve anything.

Building a routine
Start handling your puppy's ears gently and positively from a young age, well before there is any need to actually clean them, so they learn to tolerate the process calmly. Over-cleaning can be as unhelpful as under-cleaning, since it can disrupt the ear's natural balance, so this is genuinely a case where more is not automatically better.
