Dandelion is the forage that rabbits and guinea pigs recognise from outside, and it is the one that gets a sulky animal back to the hay rack faster than anything else on our shelf. Vitakraft put marigold in alongside it, which is a second thing most small animals will hunt through the hay for.

Underneath, it is real feeding hay: 94% meadow hay with half of that Timothy, then 3% dried marigold and 3% dried dandelion, and nothing else. No additives of any kind are declared. Vitakraft's published figures put the crude fibre at 27.0%, the highest of their three scented hays, with 9.7% crude protein and 0.35% calcium. It is cut, sun-dried and hand-packed in Germany. Pack size is 500 g and the pack says two handfuls per animal per day.

We have gone with the brand and printed 3%, but we would not want you to buy it on the strength of a flower percentage that two sources cannot agree on. The published fat and ash figures also sit oddly against the brand's other two hays, and we have quoted them rather than tidied them.

Is it 3% dandelion or 5%?

Vitakraft's own label says 3% dandelion and 3% marigold, and Pets at Home's transcription of the UK pack says the same. Some other listings say 5% and 5%. We have printed the brand's figure and flagged the disagreement rather than picking the flatterier number.

How much should I feed?

Two handfuls per animal per day, per the pack. Hay generally should be in front of them all the time, so this goes on top of whatever bulk hay you already use.

Does dandelion really help kidney function?

It is a claim Vitakraft make in their own marketing and it is traditional rather than proven. What dandelion definitely does is taste like something a rabbit recognises. We would not buy it as a health intervention.

Is 500 g enough for one rabbit?

Not as a main hay supply, no. A rabbit should be eating a great deal of hay every day, so a 500 g bag is a top-up rather than a week's feeding. Buy your bulk hay separately.

Why does the fat figure look so low?

We noticed that too. Vitakraft publish 0.1% crude fat here and 2.6% for their other two scented hays, which is a strange gap for three products that are 94% or more the same thing. We have quoted the published figures and would not lean on them.
