Three hedgerow berries baked into a rabbit stick: elderberry at 1.5%, rowan at 0.87% and juniper at 0.87%. Juniper in particular is not a berry you see in small animal food, and it is why this one smells quite different from the rest of the range when you open the pack.

The declaration is cereals, derivatives of vegetable origin, the three dried berries, minerals, seeds and honey. Vitakraft publish a full analysis for this recipe, which they do not do for most of the range: 11.4% protein, 3.0% fat, 4.3% crude fibre and 2.7% crude ash, with 0.60% calcium and 0.37% phosphorus. Vitamin A is at 6600 IU and vitamin D3 at 660 IU per kilo, and it is preserved with calcium propionate at 3922 mg/kg. Two sticks, 112 g, cage clips included.

0.60% calcium against 0.37% phosphorus is a ratio worth noticing. For a rabbit already prone to urinary sludge, a calcium-rich grain treat is not neutral, and this is one of the few sticks where the figure is actually published so you can see it. It is a treat quantity rather than a diet, but if your vet has asked you to watch calcium, this is a stick to ration rather than one to hang permanently on the bars.

Common questions

Are juniper berries safe for rabbits?

At 0.87% in a baked treat, yes. Vitakraft have used them in this recipe for years and declare them openly. It is a flavour ingredient, not a dose of anything.

How often can a rabbit have one?

A maximum of two per week, as a treat, with fresh water and hay always available. That is the rabbit allowance. The hamster sticks in the same range say one per week and do not mention hay, so do not carry that figure across.

Should I avoid it if my rabbit has had bladder sludge?

Talk to your vet, but the published calcium figure is 0.60%, which is not nothing for a rabbit with a history of urinary trouble. We would rather you saw the number than found out later that it was never published.

Why is the sodium figure so much lower than on the other sticks?

We do not know. Vitakraft publish 0.01% sodium here against 0.10% on every other stick in the range, which looks like a decimal point in the wrong place on their side. We have quoted what they publish rather than quietly correcting it.

Does it contain preservatives?

Yes, calcium propionate at 3922 mg/kg. No added sugar and no added artificial colouring are declared for this line.
