This is the plain one, and it is the best seller in the range for exactly that reason. No fruit, no berries, no novelty: baked cereal with spelt and honey pressed in three layers round a wooden stick, with a clip so it hangs off the cage bars. Rabbits that are suspicious of new flavours will take this when they take nothing else.

The composition is cereals with spelt at 1.6%, derivatives of vegetable origin, fruits, minerals at 1.1%, seeds, vegetables and honey at 0.33%. Note where the honey sits: at a third of one per cent it is a flavour rather than a sweetener, despite being the word on the front of the pack. Vitakraft add vitamin A at 6600 IU and vitamin D3 at 660 IU per kilo and preserve it with calcium propionate. The pack is two sticks and 112 g.

How much protein and fibre is in it?

Not published. Vitakraft print no analytical constituents for this recipe. They do print a panel for the hamster honey and spelt stick, but the two recipes are not the same, so we have not borrowed it.

How often can a rabbit have one?

A maximum of two per week, as a treat, with fresh water and hay always available. That is the rabbit allowance. The hamster sticks in the same range say one per week and do not mention hay, so do not carry that figure across.

Is 0.33% honey enough to matter?

Not nutritionally, no. It is there for flavour and for the name on the pack. If you are avoiding sugars for a rabbit with dental or gut trouble, the grain is the bigger issue, not the honey.

How long does one stick last?

Days rather than minutes, if the rabbit is engaged with it. The triple-baked layers are hard on purpose, which is what makes it a boredom breaker rather than a snack.

Does it contain preservatives or colourings?

Calcium propionate at 3922 mg/kg, yes. Vitakraft declare no added sugar and no added artificial colouring on this line.
