A Kräcker is a length of natural wood with three baked layers of grain pressed round it, and a rabbit takes days rather than minutes to work through one. The slow, awkward eating is most of the point. This is the version Vitakraft fortify, so it sits somewhere between a treat and a supplement.

The ingredient list is grain first: wheat, wheat flour, maize, millet, sorghum, oats and oat flakes, then dried carrot and leek, calcium carbonate, turmeric flour, honey and lucerne. Vitakraft's own figures for it are 11.6% crude protein, 3.6% crude fat, 5.7% crude fibre and 3.2% crude ash, with 0.90% calcium and 0.30% phosphorus. The vitamin load is what earns the name: vitamin A from two sources at 3423 IU and 9300 IU per kilo, 660 IU of vitamin D3, vitamin E at 100.0 mg and 50.0 mg from two forms, and 500 mg of vitamin C.

The fibre figure is the one worth reading. 5.7% crude fibre is low for a rabbit, whose gut is built to run on the long indigestible fibre in hay. A baked grain stick is close to the opposite of that, vitamins or no vitamins, and the calcium propionate means it is a preserved product rather than a fresh one. It belongs clipped to the bars as an occasional job to do, not counted as part of the diet.
