Of everything in this batch, this is the stick whose label is most completely published, which is a decent reason to start here if you have not bought one before. It is two triple-baked sticks on natural wood with cage clips, made with rolled oat and wheat flakes, a little fruit and honey, for Syrian hamsters.

The composition is cereals with oat flakes at 7.2% and wheat flakes at 3.2%, derivatives of vegetable origin, minerals, fruits at 1% and honey. The UK pack carries a full analysis: 11% protein, 4% crude fibres, 3% crude oils and fats, 3% crude ash and 10% moisture. Vitamin A is at 6600 i.E and vitamin D3 at 600 i.E. Feeding is no more than one Kräcker per animal per week.

Worth knowing if that matters to you. The second thing is the fruit level: this is the fruit stick, and fruit is at 1%, behind the minerals. What you are mostly buying is baked cereal flake.

Common questions

Why is there only 1% fruit in the fruit stick?

Because the flakes are the substance and the fruit is the flavour. It sits behind the minerals on the ingredient list. That is normal for this kind of treat, but the front of the pack does not make it obvious.

How does it compare with the nut version?

Much lighter. This one declares 3% crude oils and fats, where the nut stick has nuts at 14.8% and publishes no analysis at all. For a small, older or overweight hamster this is the better weekly treat.

How often can a hamster have one?

No more than one per animal per week, per the pack, with fresh water available at all times. Take the stick out between sessions rather than leaving it clipped in.

Does it contain artificial colours?

The UK pack declares colourants under sensory additives. Vitakraft do not specify which. If you are avoiding them, this is the one in the range to avoid.

Is it suitable for dwarf hamsters or gerbils?

It is sold for Syrian hamsters. A dwarf hamster can have some, but break a piece off rather than giving a whole stick, and count it against the weekly allowance.
