The guinea pig version of the fruit and flake Kräcker differs from the hamster one in a way that actually matters: it carries added vitamin C at 500 mg per kilo. Guinea pigs cannot make their own, so every guinea pig product worth buying has thought about this, and the hamster stick that looks identical on the shelf has none in it.

The European composition is cereals with wheat flakes at 3.2% and oat flakes at 7.3%, then derivatives of vegetable origin, seeds, fruits at 2%, minerals and honey. Alongside the vitamin C there is vitamin A at 6600 IU and vitamin D3 at 660 IU per kilo, and the pack is preserved. It is two triple-baked sticks on natural wood with cage clips, 112 g.

Do not rely on this for your guinea pig's vitamin C. 500 mg per kilo is a sensible amount to have in a treat, but a treat fed once a week at a few grams a time contributes almost nothing to a daily requirement. Common questions

Is this the same as the hamster fruit stick?

No, and it is worth knowing. The guinea pig recipe has roughly double the fruit, adds seeds, and includes 500 mg/kg of vitamin C which the hamster version has none of. They look near enough identical in the pack.

Does it cover my guinea pig's vitamin C needs?

No. It is a once-a-week treat of a few grams. Vitamin C has to come from a good guinea pig pellet and from fresh food. Think of the 500 mg/kg as a nice detail rather than a supplement.

What are the protein and fibre figures?

Not published. Vitakraft print no analytical constituents for this recipe. We have deliberately not borrowed the hamster version's panel, because the two recipes are declared differently.

I have seen an ingredient list for this with sugar in it. Which is right?

The one on this page. The list with sugar, ground grain sorghum and artificial colour in it is Vitakraft's American recipe and it has found its way onto some UK listings. The European pack we sell declares no added sugar and no added artificial colouring.

How often can a guinea pig have one?

A maximum of one Kräcker per week, as a treat, with fresh water and hay always available. That is this pack's own line, not a range default: the rabbit versions say two.
