Tetra's Peat & Barley Straw is a liquid extract of peat and barley straw that darkens the water slightly, using natural humic substances to cut down the sunlight reaching it and slow algae growth as a result, rather than treating algae directly. It can be used across the year, though Tetra recommend it specifically in spring, when pond plants are still slow to compete with algae for light and nutrients.
