Product description
Hard-baked biscuits the size of a fingernail, shaped as hearts. They are crunchy enough to give a small animal something to work its teeth against, and small enough to be a genuine single reward rather than a meal, which is rarer in this aisle than it should be.
The composition is short and it is also vague in one place: ground corn, vegetable by-products, and vegetables listed as alfalfa at 3% and beetroot at 1%. Ground corn first makes this a cereal biscuit. VetUK's transcription of the same pack words it as cereals, vegetable by-products, alfalfa 3% and beetroot 1%, which is the same list. Pack is 100g, which is a great many hearts.
- Ground corn leads the composition
- Alfalfa 3% and beetroot 1% are the named vegetables
- Hard baked, with a crunchy texture for chewing
- 100g pack, suitable for all small animals
'Vegetable by-products' is the second ingredient and it is not a specific term. It is a legal category that can cover a range of plant material left over from food processing, and no more detail is given on the pack. Combined with ground corn in first place, that makes this a plain cereal treat rather than the herb-and-flower sort. It is not a criticism of the product, which is honest about what it is, but it is the reason we would not feed these daily.
Who it's for: rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small animals, and particularly anyone doing hand-taming or clicker work who needs a lot of very small rewards. Feed sparingly to chinchillas and degus.
Why we chose it
Every small animal owner eventually needs a treat small enough to hand over fifty times, and most are far too big. These are the right size and hard enough to be worth chewing. We are blunt about the ground corn and the unspecified vegetable by-products, because the pack is pretty and the ingredient list is not.

Common questions
Is there an analytical constituents panel?
No. Both Pets at Home and VetUK transcribe the composition and print no analysis, and Pets at Home explicitly record protein, fibre, oils, ash and moisture as 'Not stated'. Rosewood do publish panels on some of their treats, so this one does not have one.
What are vegetable by-products?
A broad legal category for plant material left over from food processing. The pack does not say which, which is the least specific part of this label and worth knowing before you buy.
How many can I give?
The pack says feed as an occasional treat or reward as part of a balanced diet, being careful not to overfeed, and to feed sparingly with chinchillas and degus.
Are they good for training?
Yes, that is their best use. They are small, hard and identical, so a long session does not amount to much food.
Is it suitable for a rabbit on a diet?
Corn-based biscuits are not our first choice for a rabbit that needs to lose weight. A plain dried herb mix does the same job at a fraction of the calories.
