A pod-shaped gnaw made from hay and grasses rather than baked dough, which is the whole idea behind the Veggie Burst range. Rosewood spent two years working out how to process natural fibre so it holds a shape, lasts under a rabbit's teeth and still counts as forage rather than confectionery.

The green Veggie Burst recipe is led by timothy hay at 24.7% and barley grass at 23.5%, with pea fibre at 15%, corn starch, alfalfa at 10%, dried pumpkin at 3.5%, vegetable glycerin, dried carrot and dried apple at 2% each and spirulina at 0.8%. The published analysis is 13.6% crude fibre and 0.7% crude fats and oils, which is the figure worth knowing: 0.7% fat is very low for anything shaped and sold as a treat. Each pod is about 9cm long and the pack is 80g.

That is far stricter than the low fat figure would suggest and it is worth respecting; corn starch and vegetable glycerin are in the recipe as binders and they carry calories. Read it as a weekly enrichment object rather than a daily treat, and the 80g pack suddenly looks like a lot rather than a little.

Common questions

Is there a full analytical constituents panel?

Only a partial one. The pack gives a typical analysis of 13.6% crude fibre and 0.7% crude fats and oils, and no protein, ash or moisture figure is published anywhere. Rosewood do print fuller panels on some treats, so this one is genuinely half a panel.

Really only one a week?

That is what the pack says, up to one pod per week depending on species and age. Each pod is a substantial object at around 9cm, and the binders in it are not calorie-free.

How is this different from the Nibble Leaves?

It is the same green recipe in a different shape. The pinecones in the range use a different, brown recipe based on wheat plant and oat bran, so do not assume the figures carry across.

Is spirulina doing anything at 0.8%?

It is largely there for colour and as a trace nutrient. At under 1% we would not buy the pack for the spirulina.

Will a hamster manage a 9cm pod?

It will work on it over days rather than eat it in one go, which is fine. For the smallest animals we would snap a pod rather than give it whole.
