A dried cob of maize on the husk, with a hanger so it can be tied to the bars. It is the simplest thing in the small animal aisle: one ingredient, no binder, no coating, nothing added. Rabbits, guinea pigs and rats work at it for a long time, and most parrots will take one too.

The value here is mechanical rather than nutritional. The cob is hard and fibrous enough that an animal has to grip and grind rather than crunch, which is the chewing action that keeps continuously growing teeth in shape. The analysis is 8.5% protein, 9.2% crude fibre, 3.8% oils and fats and 1.3% ash, with moisture up to 14%. Each cob is roughly 25 x 9 x 5 cm.

What is actually in it?

Maize. The composition on the pack is a single word, which is unusual enough in this aisle to be worth saying.

Can chinchillas and degus have it?

We would not. Both species handle starch and sugar poorly and maize is a starchy grain. A plain hazel or apple wood gnaw does the same job for their teeth without the carbohydrate.

How often can a rabbit have one?

Rosewood do not print a feeding quantity on this pack. Given that it is a starchy grain, we treat it as an occasional item rather than a daily one, and we would not leave a cob in permanently with a rabbit that is putting on weight.

Is the husk safe?

The cob is sold on the husk and the husk is part of the fun; animals strip it before they get to the kernels. Take out the hanger cord once the cob is down to a stub.

Does it come in different sizes?

The cobs themselves are one size, around 25cm long. The packs come as two cobs or ten.
