A parsley bell is one of the oldest formats in this aisle and this is the reformulated version, with fenugreek seed and chamomile added. It hangs from a twisted paper cord so it can be tied inside a hutch, which turns a treat into something that has to be worked at from underneath.

The composition is unusually clean for a shaped treat: dried parsley at 58%, wheat at 18%, vegetable starch to bind it, then fenugreek seed and dried chamomile at 4.5% each. Fenugreek is the interesting addition, since it is a well-known appetite stimulant for rabbits and rodents and it has a strong, sweet smell without being sugar. There is no added sugar in the list. The bell is around 8cm wide and 7cm high and the pack is 400g.

Parsley is high in calcium, and that is a real consideration for some rabbits. For a healthy rabbit this is a non-issue; for one your vet has already talked to you about, it is worth asking first.

Is there an analytical constituents panel?

No. The full composition with percentages is on the pack and there are no protein, fibre or fat figures. Rosewood do print panels on some of their treats, so the absence here is specific to this pack.

Why does it smell so strongly?

Fenugreek. At 4.5% it is a small part of the recipe and it dominates the smell, which is exactly why it is in there; fenugreek is widely used to get a reluctant small animal eating.

Is the calcium in parsley a problem?

Not for most rabbits. If yours has had bladder sludge or urinary stones, high-calcium greens including parsley are usually restricted, so check with your vet before hanging up something that is 58% of it.

Does it need to be hung up?

It comes with a twisted paper cord for that. Left on the floor it gets soiled and ignored, like every other small animal treat.

How long does a 400g bell last?

Longer than you would expect. For one rabbit it is a slow burn rather than a single sitting, which is the point of the format.
