Full description

A slice of cultivated meadow, dried whole with the roots still in the loam and set into an edible parchment tray coated in hay. The animal gets to do two things it would do outside and almost never gets to do indoors: nibble the green tops, then dig through the soil to find the roots underneath.

The composition is 79.2% loam with whole wild flowers, herbs and grasses in it, including dandelion, ribwort, daisies, red clover, common plantain, chamomile and chickweed, then meadow hay at 8.5%, vegetable starch and cellulose fibre, with marigold blossoms at 0.3%, added dandelion at 0.3% and rose blossoms at 0.2%. It measures roughly 4cm high by 24cm wide by 30cm deep, which is a serious footprint in a hutch.

This will make a mess, and that is what you are buying. It is soil. A rabbit digging through 24 by 30 centimetres of dried loam will get it across the floor of the hutch and into the bedding, and the pack's own advice is to add and remove it rather than leave it down. Keep it away from standing water or it goes claggy and mouldy. If you need a tidy treat, this is not it.

Who it's for: rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus with a digging habit and nowhere to use it. It is one of the very few products that lets an indoor rabbit dig at something legitimate rather than the carpet.

Common questions

Is there an analytical constituents panel?

No. Pets at Home's transcription lists the full composition and then records protein, fibre, oils, ash and moisture all as 'Not stated'. Rosewood do print panels on some of their small animal treats, so this pack simply does not carry one.

Is the soil safe?

It is dried loam and it is an ingredient rather than packing material; the plants are still rooted in it. Rabbits ingest small amounts while digging, which is the point of describing it as mineral-rich.

How long does one last?

Longer if you lift it out between sessions, which is what the pack advises. Left down permanently it gets soiled and has to go.

Is it messy?

Yes. There is no version of this that is not. Put it in a tray, a litter box or the part of the hutch you do not mind sweeping.

Can it get wet?

No. The pack says specifically not to place it near standing water. Damp loam and dried plants will go mouldy.
