A loose mix rather than a formed treat: rolled oat, wheat and pea flakes with carrot, beetroot and parsley, then a run of herbs including peppermint, dandelion, lemon balm, marigold and red clover. It is sold as a treat, and it is also one of the more reliable things to offer a rabbit that has gone off its food, because the smell does a lot of the work.

The ingredient list is ordered by weight, and the first three entries are flaked cereals and pulses. That is worth reading properly: this is a grain-based mix with herbs through it, not a herb mix. The herbs are real and named, and locust bean fruit, which is carob, is in there too and is naturally sweet. Sold in a 500g tub, which is a lot of treat for one rabbit.

This is a cereal mix with herbs in it, not the other way round. Oat flakes, wheat flakes and pea flakes come first, and there is carob in the list, so it is more calorific than the green look of it suggests. Rabbits and guinea pigs also selectively feed, meaning they will pick the flakes out and leave the herbs, which is exactly backwards. Scattering it through hay rather than tipping it in a bowl fixes most of that.

Who it's for: a rabbit or guinea pig that needs tempting, or anyone who wants a foraging scatter rather than a biscuit. Less suitable as a daily top-up for an animal already carrying weight.

Common questions

Is there an analytical constituents panel?

No. Pets at Home's transcription of this pack records protein, fibre, oils, ash and moisture all as 'Not stated', and neither VetUK nor Rosewood's own site publishes any figures. Rosewood do print a panel on some of their products, so its absence here is a decision about this pack rather than a brand policy.

Can it be fed every day?

Rosewood describe it as suitable for daily feeding and as an appetite stimulant. The pack's own guidance is to offer it in moderation and in an amount appropriate to your pet's size, and with a cereal-led mix we would take that seriously.

My rabbit only eats the flakes and leaves the herbs.

That is normal and it is the main argument against feeding it from a bowl. Scatter a pinch through the hay so the whole mix has to be worked for, and do not top the bowl up until it is empty.

Is it suitable for chinchillas and degus?

It is sold for all small animals, but a mix led by oat, wheat and pea flakes with carob in it is not what we would choose for a chinchilla or a degu. Plain dried herbs suit them better.

Why is 500g so much?

It is a trade-sized tub, and for one rabbit it will last months. Keep it sealed and cool; the herbs lose their smell first, and the smell is the point.
