Full description

Two sticks per pack, built on meadow hay rather than cereal, with dandelion worked through and a twisted paper cord so they can be hung. They are designed to snap, so you can break off a portion for a smaller animal rather than hand over the whole thing.

The composition leads with meadow hay at 27.2%, then vegetable starch, oat flakes and dried dandelion at 7.5%. After that it is wheat flakes, pea flakes at 5.7%, dried carrot and dried parsley at 4.9% each, alfalfa, puffed wheat, then a long list of named botanicals: lemon balm at 2%, peppermint at 1.8%, beetroot and ribwort at 1.6% each, echinacea at 1.4%, oats, red clover and marigold blossoms at 0.5% each. There is no honey and no added sugar. Pack is 140g.

No added sugar is not the same as low in starch. Vegetable starch is the second ingredient and there are oat flakes, wheat flakes, pea flakes and puffed wheat in there too, so the stick holds its shape because of carbohydrate. It is a treat, and a substantial one. Snapping off a portion rather than hanging a whole stick is the sensible way to use them, especially for guinea pigs and anything smaller.

Who it's for: rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus by design, and hamsters, gerbils and other small animals too. A good hanging treat for a cage that has nothing to climb for.

Is there an analytical constituents panel?

No. The pack carries a long ingredient list with percentages and no protein, fibre or fat figures. Rosewood do print panels on some of their treats, so this one does not have one rather than the brand never publishing them.

Is it really sugar free?

No added sugar and no sugar-rich ingredients like honey, which is what the pack claims and what the list supports. The dried carrot at 4.9% and beetroot at 1.6% carry natural sugars, and the starch content is significant.

How much is a portion?

A 140g pack holds two sticks and they are made to snap, and for a guinea pig or smaller we would break a stick into two or three pieces rather than hang it whole.

What is echinacea doing at 1.4%?

It is one of the traditional forage herbs in the mix rather than a functional dose, and we would not buy the pack for it. The dandelion at 7.5% is the headline botanical.

Can it be hung in a cage?

Yes, it comes with a strong twisted paper cord. Hanging it makes the animal work at it standing up, which is better exercise than eating off the floor.
