Product description

Six crunchy, heart-shaped cookies made on a pea flour base rather than a cereal one, with apple, a run of herbs and edible viola flowers baked into the top. Grain-free small animal treats are less common than the packaging on this aisle suggests, and the ingredient list here backs the claim up.

Pea flour is 54.1% of the recipe, and after the vegetable oil the list runs through grass seed, canary seed, apple at 5.3%, buckwheat, peppermint at 3.4%, then parsley, carrot, dandelion and nettle at 1.7% each, with hemp, linseed, fennel and black cumin seeds and viola flowers at 1.3%. Every plant in there is named and most carry a percentage, which is rare.

Pea flour 54.1%, so grain-free by construction
Apple 5.3%, peppermint 3.4%, viola flowers 1.3%
Parsley, carrot, dandelion and nettle at 1.7% each
Six pieces per pack

Grain-free is not the same as low in starch or low in calories. Pea flour at over half the recipe is still a concentrated carbohydrate, and there is added vegetable oil in second place on the list. These are a treat by any measure. If you are buying grain-free because a rabbit has a weight problem rather than a grain sensitivity, the honest answer is that portion size will do more than the ingredient swap.

Who it's for: rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, and owners who want to hand-feed something recognisable rather than scatter a mix. Good for a pet that needs the same treat every time for training or medication.

Why we chose it

We wanted at least one grain-free small animal cookie where the label actually supports the claim, and this one does, right down to the percentages on the individual herbs. The shape is incidental but useful: a heart is easy to snap in half for a smaller pet. It is the treat we suggest when someone wants to hand-feed rather than scatter.

Common questions

Is there an analytical constituents panel?

No. The full ingredient list is on the pack and transcribed by retailers, and no protein, fibre or fat figures are printed anywhere. Rosewood do carry panels on some Naturals treats, so this pack simply does not have one.

Are these really grain-free?

Yes, on the ingredient list. The base is pea flour, and the seeds in there, grass, canary, buckwheat, hemp, linseed, fennel and black cumin, are not cereal grains.

How many can a rabbit have?

Rosewood print no quantity on this pack. With six cookies in a pack and pea flour over half the recipe, we would treat one a day as plenty for a rabbit or guinea pig and less for anything smaller.

Are the pansy flowers actually edible?

Viola flowers at 1.3% are in the composition, so they are an ingredient rather than a decoration. Violas are routinely fed to rabbits and guinea pigs.

Will a hamster eat a whole one?

Not in one sitting. They are sized for a rabbit's mouth; for a hamster or a gerbil, break one up rather than giving it whole.
