Cardboard bedding is bought by the bale and the big bale is always the cheaper way to do it. What decided this one for me is the packaging — the whole thing goes on the compost or in the garden bin, so there is no plastic wrap left behind every time. It is bulky rather than heavy, which is the awkward end of the postage table.

Rabbits, guinea pigs and rats all live with their noses at floor level. That makes the bedding less a piece of furniture than the air supply — whatever comes off it when the animal digs in is what they breathe for the rest of the day, which is why dust is the specification that matters most and gets asked about least.

Eco-Nest is made from recycled virgin cardboard, and Pillow Wad's two claims for it are that it is virtually dust free and that it takes up liquid quickly while masking odours. The packaging is the other half of the pitch: the wrap is fully home compostable and plastic free, so the bale and its packaging can go on the compost heap, in the garden waste bin or in the kitchen caddy. Used bedding is stated to biodegrade in 8 to 12 weeks. It comes as a 3.2KG bale and Pillow Wad list it as usable with any animal, large or small.
