Alfalfa is not a grass. It is a legume, and that single botanical fact decides who should be eating it — because it brings more protein, more energy and more calcium than the timothy or meadow hay that fills the rack.

Oxbow's is 100% alfalfa hay with nothing added: preservative and additive free, and loose rather than baled, so the bag contains stems, leaves and a limited amount of seed head. Their guaranteed analysis puts crude protein at a minimum of 16.00%, crude fat at a minimum of 1.50%, fibre at a maximum of 32.00% and moisture at a maximum of 15.00%. The long strand fibre is the same as you get in a grass hay; the concentration is what differs.

No. Oxbow position it alongside grass hay, not instead of it: unlimited alfalfa plus free choice grass hay for growing animals, and grass hay plus alfalfa for nursing females.

Can I give it to a healthy adult?

Oxbow’s direction for mature animals is occasional small amounts, as a treat. If you are unsure for your animal, your vet is the person to ask.
