This is the cheapest paper bedding I can get hold of that is not wood shavings, and on a shelf where almost everything is shavings that is the whole reason it is here. It comes in two pack formats, so somebody with one hamster is not made to buy the same quantity as somebody with a hutch.

Hamsters, gerbils and mice do not sleep on their bedding, they sleep inside it. It gets shredded, tunnelled and packed in around them, so the material spends the night against a face and a set of airways roughly the size of a thumbnail. That is why dust is a bigger question in a small animal cage than anywhere else in the house.

This is a paper flake, made from repurposed food-grade paper — a material that had to be clean enough for food in its first life. Norfolk describe it as white, absorbent, soft, dust free and odour controlling, and as allergy free, which is the specific job it exists to do: somewhere to go for a pet that reacts to sawdust, hay or straw. They list it for hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, degus, rabbits, chinchillas, mice and rats.

Is it any use for a pet that reacts to sawdust?

That is the reason it exists. Norfolk state it is allergy free and name pets allergic to sawdust, hay or straw as the ones it suits. They publish no allergen testing to us, so it is their description rather than a measured claim.

Will every bag be the same white?

No. Norfolk say they cannot guarantee the brightness of the colour because the paper is repurposed. They do state there are no issues with the material scratching, catching in feet or causing irritation.
