A hollow snug made of parchment board coated in meadow hay, with a carrot roof on top. It is sold as a toy and it is labelled as a food, and both are true: the animal hides in it, gnaws the walls down over a week or two, and the whole thing gradually disappears.

The label is more informative than the marketing. Composition is hay 34%, vegetable starch and carrot 32%, declared as a complementary pet food, with analytical constituents of protein 6.3%, fat content 1.7%, crude fibre 10.0% and crude ash 3.7%. That fibre figure is the number to look at: 10.0% is respectable for a chew toy and nowhere near what hay itself provides, so this adds to the diet rather than contributing to the fibre side of it. The large size is 600g of structure, which is enough for a rabbit to get inside.

Two thirds of it by weight is not hay, and it is not a hay substitute. Hay is 34% of the composition and starch and carrot make up the bulk of the rest, so at 10.0% crude fibre this is closer to an edible hideout than to forage. A rabbit needs unlimited real hay regardless of what is in the cage, and a snug that is being eaten fast is a snug that is displacing something better. The carrot content is also why it goes down quickly with some animals and sits ignored with others.
