A cage that never changes shape gets explored once and then ignored, and a swing is one of the few additions that gives a small animal something genuinely different to interact with rather than another surface to sit on.

Little Friends' swing is made from plywood and arrives as a flat-pack of interlocking sections, which the makers describe as neat and secure once assembled, with no fixings needed beyond the interlock itself. It measures 14 x 10 x 2cm and is built to be gnaw-resistant and non-toxic.

On weight limits. the makers don't give a weight limit or say which small animals it's rated for, so match the swing's scale — 14 x 10 x 2cm — to your own pet's size before fitting it, rather than assuming it suits every species in the small-animal category.

Who it's for: small animal owners after a simple, interlocking wooden addition to a cage rather than a plastic toy.
