A seed stick for hamsters and gerbils, the kind that clips between the cage bars and gets worked at over a few days rather than eaten in one sitting. The interest is the dried fruit: apple, apricot, banana, raisins and currants, held together with honey rather than scattered loose in a bowl.

The base is selected seeds, nuts and cereals. Johnson's describe the fruit content as nutritious dried fruits and name five of them, which is more than most seed sticks bother to do, but they stop there. There is no percentage against any ingredient, so you know what is in it and not how much. The stick is sold as a single 45g unit.

Dried fruit and honey mean sugar, and the pack does not say how much. Every ingredient after the seed base is a concentrated sugar, and Johnson's publish no analytical constituents for this product or any other in their range, so there is no fat or sugar figure to check it against. A hamster is a small animal with a strong appetite for exactly this, so the portion control is yours rather than the label's. Treat it as a few days' entertainment, not a food.

Who it's for: Hamster and gerbil keepers who want something to clip in the cage that gets chewed at over time, and who are comfortable deciding the ration themselves because the pack will not do it for them.

Why is there no analytical constituents panel?

Because Johnson's Veterinary Products do not publish one for anything. We checked all 251 product pages on their site and none carries a protein, fat, fibre or ash figure. It is not specific to this stick.

How often should it be fed?

Johnson's call it a complementary treat and say on the sibling rabbit version that a treat must not replace the normal balanced diet. They give no frequency for the hamster stick, so it is a judgement call.

Is it suitable for rabbits or guinea pigs?
