Christmas photographs of pets are usually staged on something the animal has no intention of lying on. A soft plush mat is the exception, because it goes on the floor where the cat already sleeps, in a shape that happens to look like a stocking, a wreath or a strawberry. The animal treats it as a bed and you get the picture, which is a better outcome than most seasonal pet purchases manage.

The plush is cushioned rather than flat, and that cushioning is the practical reason cats and small dogs adopt a mat at all: it puts a layer between them and a cold hard floor. It is light enough to move from room to room as the sun does, or to fold away in January without needing storage space set aside for it. Three shapes are offered, a Christmas garland, a strawberry and a stocking, so there is a version that fits a room without dominating the corner it sits in.

• Soft, cushioned plush throughout
• Three shapes: Christmas garland, strawberry and stocking
• Suits cats and small dogs
• Light enough to move around the house
• Packs to 50 x 35 x 6cm, weighing 1.5kg

On sizing: the only measurements published are for the parcel rather than the flat mat, so we are not going to quote a mat size here. Be clear about what this is as well: a flat plush mat with no raised sides and no bolster, so a cat or dog who likes to curl against an edge will get less from it than one who sprawls out flat.

Who it's for: Cats and small dogs who sleep on the floor, in households that enjoy some seasonal decoration the animal will actually make use of.
