A textured chew surface does something a smooth one doesn't: it works against the gum as a dog bites down, rather than just sitting there being chewed.

The Rubber Oval Rope is a solid rubber ball, 100mm across, with a ribbed and raised pimple-effect surface built to give a good gum massage as your dog chews. A rope handle is attached, so the same toy works as a tug as well as a chew.
