Not every cat responds to catnip, and the ones who do not are not being difficult about it. The response is inherited, and a fair proportion of cats simply do not have it, which is worth knowing before you order the four-tin set rather than a single can. For the cats who do respond, a pinch of dried leaf turns a scratcher that has been ignored for a month into the most interesting object in the house.

There are two things in the tin and they do different jobs. Catnip is the half that produces the rolling and rubbing, and the effect is short-lived, with a cat who has just had a session not reacting again for some while afterwards. Cat grass leaves are the calmer half, more interesting to chew than to react to. Sprinkle either over bedding, rub it into a play mat, or push a pinch into a fabric toy that has lost its appeal.
