Full description

Small pets in the wild spend most of their waking hours foraging rather than eating from a bowl, and a mini hay bale is one of the few things that lets a caged animal do something closer to that - pulling and picking at it rather than having food simply appear. Burgess have built this one from timothy hay with marigold worked through.

It is 92% timothy hay, with marigold at 6%, plus a small amount of raffia and starch to help it hold its bale shape. It is aimed at rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas, and is meant as a snack rather than a main diet.

Timothy hay 92%, marigold 6%
Crude protein 9.6%, crude fat 1.6%, crude fibre 31.1%
Calcium 0.39%, phosphorus 0.16%
No added additives
Suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas

On how much to give. This is a snack meant to be fed in moderation alongside a diet that is mostly hay in its ordinary form - it is not a replacement for the loose hay a rabbit or guinea pig needs available at all times, and fresh drinking water should always be down alongside it.

Who it's for: owners looking to add foraging enrichment to a hutch or cage, rather than a primary source of hay.

Why we chose it

It gives a small pet something to work at rather than something that just appears, which is worth the modest price on its own. The high fibre figure - 31.1% - also means it fits comfortably alongside a hay-based diet rather than fighting it.
