Most gut supplements tell you they contain billions of probiotics and stop there. This one publishes its composition and its analytical constituents in full, which is unusual enough on this shelf to be the main reason to consider it — you can actually see what you are buying.

The base is a yeast product providing mannan-oligosaccharides, postbiotics and beta-glucans from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with fructo-oligosaccharides as the prebiotic alongside it. There is calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, calcium sulphate, magnesium stearate and vegetal carbon, plus bentonite as a binder at 5,994mg per kg. The analysis gives crude protein 13.4%, crude fat 3.87%, crude fibre 0.2%, moisture 4.7%, ash 29.8%, sodium 0.13% and magnesium 0.23%. Bugalugs describe it as supporting healthy digestion, reducing wind and firming up stools.

Loose stools that are new, or that have blood in them, are a vet visit rather than a supplement. Firming things up is a reasonable goal for a dog who is simply a bit unreliable; it is the wrong response to a dog who has suddenly changed, is off their food, or is losing weight. And the ash figure at 29.8% is high because of the mineral content — worth knowing if your dog is on a restricted diet for any reason, and worth a word with your vet if they are.

Who it's for: dogs with generally unreliable digestion, dogs coming off a course of antibiotics, and owners who want to know what is in the tub rather than take it on trust.
