On what "complementary" means here
This is not a complete diet on its own. Bestpets' own guidance is that good clean hay is essential alongside it for a hamster's digestion, so the sack is meant to sit next to a hay supply rather than instead of one — buy this expecting to keep hay topped up too, not as a one-bag solution.
Why we chose it
A 15kg sack means one delivery covers a hamster or gerbil for a long stretch, which matters more than the recipe once you've checked the basics are there — real grains and pellets, not just a bag labelled seed mix. It is a complementary feed rather than a complete one, so it earns its place next to a hay supply rather than instead of it.

Full description
A hamster given a full bowl does not eat it where it sits. It stuffs what it wants into its cheek pouches and buries the rest in the bedding for later, which is one reason a varied mix tends to get eaten more evenly than a single plain pellet — there is less reason to reject the whole bowl if only part of it is one thing.
This is a complementary feed built from cooked and flaked ingredients rather than one plain pellet: wheatfeed, grass pellet, oats, soya beans, whole sunflower seeds and sugar beet run through the pellet mix itself, with flaked peas, wheat, extruded wheat, flaked beans, maize, oats, flaked maize, locust beans, peanuts and sunflower seeds making up the rest of the bag. It is fortified rather than left as plain grain.
- Crude protein 17.0%, crude fibres 7.2%, crude oil & fats 8.7%, crude ash 4.9%
- Fortified with Vitamin D3 at 20,000 i.u./kg and iron at 12mg/kg
- Built from wheatfeed, grass pellet, oats, soya beans and sunflower seeds, among others
- Bestpets say never to offer it straight from the fridge
- 15KG sack

Who it's for: owners of a hamster or gerbil who want a proper mixed feed in bulk rather than a small bag that needs replacing every few weeks, on the understanding that hay is still doing part of the job.

Common questions
Is this a complete food, or do I still need to feed hay?

Does it have added vitamins?
Yes — it's fortified with Vitamin D3 at 20,000 i.u./kg and iron at 12mg/kg, alongside the vitamin and mineral premix in the pellets themselves.
Can I store it in the fridge?
No. Bestpets specifically say never to offer the food direct from the refrigerator.
