Choose a collar by the job it does
| Priority | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| All-day comfort | Flat collar with a soft lining | Smooth padding protects short coats and reduces rubbing behind the ears. |
| Dark walks | Reflective stitching or panels | The collar catches headlights without adding a separate light. |
| Details that cannot fall off | Engraved or personalised collar | Contact information stays on the collar rather than on a dangling tag. |
| Long, narrow neck | Wider tapered collar | The wider centre spreads pressure over more of a sighthound’s neck. |
Measure the neck rather than the old label
Measure where the collar naturally sits and allow room for two fingers. Small, medium and large overlap between brands, so the old size name is less reliable than the measurement.
Check the fit again after a haircut, weight change or growth spurt. A collar should not pull over the head, but it should never press into the throat at rest.
A collar carries identification; a harness carries force
For normal identification and a calm lead walker, a collar is simple and useful. For pulling, running or a long line, a harness is kinder because it moves load away from the neck. Many dogs sensibly wear both.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
How tight should a dog collar be?
You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably underneath while the collar remains too snug to pass back over the head.
Does a personalised collar replace an ID tag?
A collar can carry the legally required owner details if they are clearly and permanently marked. Dogs in the UK must also be microchipped.
Should a dog wear a collar indoors?
Many do, but remove it during unsupervised crate time or rough play if there is a snag risk. Check the skin underneath regularly for rubbing.
