Can budgies eat tuna?

Tuna is better left off a budgie's menu. It is not toxic in the way some foods genuinely are, but it is not a natural or necessary part of a budgie's diet either, and canned tuna in particular carries salt levels and trace mercury that make it a poor choice for a bird as small as a budgie. If you want to offer your budgie a source of protein beyond its usual seed and pellet, there are safer, more established options than fish.

Why tuna is not a good choice

Budgies are primarily seed-eating birds, and while a small amount of animal protein is not harmful to most birds occasionally, tuna specifically brings two problems that make it a poor pick. Canned tuna is often high in added salt, and a budgie's tiny body size means even a small amount of salt goes much further than it would in a larger animal.

Tuna and other larger fish can also carry trace amounts of mercury, which builds up in the body over time. For a bird this small, there is very little margin, so a food that offers no real nutritional benefit over safer alternatives is not worth the risk, however small that risk might be in a single serving. Budgies are also considerably smaller than the cats and dogs most fish-safety guidance is written for, so a serving that might be trivial for a larger pet can represent a much bigger share of a budgie's daily intake.

What to offer instead

A small amount of plain, fully cooked egg — with no salt, oil or seasoning — is a widely used way to give budgies a boost of protein, particularly during breeding season or moulting when demand is higher. It is a far more established and lower-risk option than fish.

Beyond that, a proper seed mix or pellet formulated for budgies, topped up with the occasional safe vegetable or seed treat, covers a budgie's nutritional needs without needing to introduce fish at all. Millet sprays and a little fresh vegetable, such as a small piece of sweetcorn or carrot, are also easy ways to add variety without introducing the risks that come with fish. None of these need careful portioning the way a novel food like tuna would, since they are already an established, regular part of a budgie's diet.

If your budgie has already eaten some

A small accidental taste of plain tuna is unlikely to cause a serious problem on its own, but watch for any change in droppings, appetite or behaviour over the following day. If your budgie seems unwell, stops eating, or you are at all concerned, contact your vet rather than waiting to see if it passes.

Do not make a habit of offering tuna as a treat even in small amounts, since the salt and mercury concerns apply every time it is given, not just to a single large serving.

Common questions

Is a tiny bit of tuna dangerous for a budgie?
A single very small taste is unlikely to cause a serious problem, but it offers no real benefit either, and repeated small amounts still carry the same salt and mercury concerns each time. It is simpler and safer to avoid it altogether rather than judge each occasion individually.
Can budgies eat any fish at all?
It is generally better to avoid fish as a food for budgies, since it is not a natural part of their diet and carries the same salt and contamination concerns as tuna, even in small amounts. Safer protein sources like plain cooked egg cover the same nutritional need without the risk.
Why do some bird owners give their budgies egg instead of fish?
Plain, fully cooked egg is a well-established way to boost protein for breeding or moulting budgies without the salt and mercury concerns that come with fish. It should still be offered plain, in a small amount, and removed after a few hours since egg spoils quickly.
What are the signs of salt poisoning in a budgie?
Excessive thirst, lethargy, and in serious cases tremors or seizures can indicate salt poisoning in a small bird, though this would typically require a meaningfully salty food rather than an accidental small taste. If you see any of these signs after your budgie has eaten something salty, contact your vet immediately.
