Can budgies eat pumpkin?
Yes, budgies can eat pumpkin, both the flesh and the seeds, and it is a popular treat that many budgies genuinely enjoy - the seeds in particular are often a favourite. Cook or offer the flesh raw in small pieces, and give seeds in moderation alongside a properly balanced diet.

Why pumpkin suits budgies well
Pumpkin flesh is soft, easy for a small bird to peck at, and carries useful vitamins without the salt, sugar or fat concerns that come with many human snack foods. It is a genuinely popular treat among budgie keepers precisely because most birds take to it readily, which is not true of every vegetable offered.
Pumpkin seeds are a particular favourite for many budgies and offer a reasonable source of healthy fats and minerals in small amounts, similar to other seeds already found in a typical budgie diet, which is part of why they tend to go down so well.
How to prepare it
Raw pumpkin flesh, cut into small manageable pieces, is fine to offer as is, and cooking it plain - with nothing added - softens the texture further if you prefer. Avoid any pumpkin that has been seasoned, sweetened, or prepared as part of a dish for people, such as pumpkin pie filling, which typically contains sugar and spices unsuitable for a budgie.
Seeds can be offered raw, either scooped straight from a fresh pumpkin or as plain, unsalted pumpkin seeds bought separately, with any shell left on being perfectly manageable for a budgie to work through - it is part of what makes seeds engaging for them to eat.
Drying fresh seeds thoroughly before offering them, or roasting them plain with no oil, salt or seasoning, is a popular way to prepare a batch in advance, and dried seeds also keep considerably longer than raw fresh pumpkin flesh does.
How much and how often
A small piece of flesh or a few seeds a couple of times a week is a sensible amount, treated as a supplement to a properly balanced diet of pellets or a good seed mix and fresh vegetables, not a replacement for any of it.
Seeds specifically are calorie-dense, so while budgies enjoy them, keep the quantity modest rather than free-feeding a large amount, particularly if your bird's usual diet already includes a seed mix.
A single budgie will get through pumpkin far more slowly than a small flock of several birds sharing a cage, so adjust the amount you put in accordingly rather than offering the same portion regardless of how many birds are eating it.
When to be cautious
Introduce pumpkin in a small amount the first time, as with any new food, and watch for any change in droppings or behaviour over the following day. Discard any uneaten fresh pumpkin from the cage within a few hours, since it spoils faster than dry seed or pellets.
If your budgie has any known digestive sensitivity, or seems unwell after trying a new food, stop offering it and speak to a vet experienced with birds rather than guessing at the cause.

Common questions
- Can budgies eat raw pumpkin seeds with the shell on?
- Yes, the shell is perfectly manageable for a budgie to work through, and cracking into a seed is part of what makes them an engaging treat. There is no need to remove the shell before offering pumpkin seeds.
- Can budgies eat pumpkin pie or tinned pumpkin?
- No, it is better to avoid both. Pumpkin pie filling typically contains added sugar and spices, and tinned pumpkin can contain added salt or sugar, neither of which is suitable for a budgie. Fresh, plain pumpkin flesh or seeds are the safer option.
- How many pumpkin seeds can a budgie have?
- A small handful spread across the week, rather than daily free access, is a sensible amount, since seeds are calorie-dense. Treat them as a favoured extra alongside a properly balanced diet rather than a staple food.
- Is pumpkin good for a budgie's health generally?
- It offers useful vitamins and, in the case of the flesh, some water content, making it a reasonable addition to a varied diet. It is a treat rather than a core nutritional food though, and should not replace a proper pellet or seed-based diet with fresh vegetables.
