Can budgies eat peanuts?

Budgies can eat plain, unsalted peanuts occasionally, but this is a food to be genuinely careful with rather than a straightforward yes. Peanuts are prone to a mould that produces aflatoxins, which are seriously harmful to birds, so quality and freshness matter far more here than with most other treats.

Why peanuts need extra caution

Peanuts, along with some other nuts and seeds, are prone to developing aflatoxin-producing mould, particularly if they have been poorly stored or kept too long. Aflatoxins are genuinely dangerous to birds even in small amounts, affecting the liver, and this is a real risk rather than an exaggerated one — it is the single reason peanuts get treated more cautiously than most other occasional treats.

This does not mean peanuts are off the menu entirely, but it does mean sourcing fresh, properly stored peanuts intended for consumption matters more than it would for most other occasional treats.

How to offer them safely

Choose plain, unsalted, unroasted or dry-roasted peanuts with no added seasoning, and check them for any sign of mould, discolouration or an off smell before offering any to your bird — if in doubt, do not use them. Buying from a shop with good turnover, rather than a bag that has sat in a cupboard for months, reduces the risk considerably.

Shelled peanuts are easier for a budgie to manage than peanuts still in the shell, and a small piece rather than a whole nut is plenty for a bird this size. Breaking a peanut into smaller pieces also makes it easier to check thoroughly for any sign of mould before offering it.

How much, and how often

A small piece, offered occasionally rather than as a regular feature, is sensible. Peanuts are also fairly high in fat for a bird this small, so treating them as an occasional extra rather than a daily treat matters for weight as well as the mould concern, and a budgie carrying extra weight faces its own set of health problems.

Salted peanuts should be avoided altogether — the salt content is far too high for a budgie's size, and salt toxicity is a real risk in birds at levels that would not trouble a larger animal.

What to feed instead

A good-quality seed or pellet mix formulated for budgies should make up the bulk of the diet, with millet spray and dedicated bird treats offering variety without the mould concern that comes with peanuts specifically. Most budgies find millet spray at least as exciting as a piece of peanut, without the same need for careful checking.

If you enjoy giving your budgie something to work at, a foraging toy filled with their normal seed mix gives the same enrichment value as a treat like peanuts, without the added risk. Rotating a small number of dedicated bird treats tends to keep a budgie just as engaged as reaching for something from the kitchen cupboard.

Common questions

Are peanuts dangerous for budgies?
They can be if mouldy, poorly stored, or salted, because of the genuine risk of aflatoxin contamination and the danger salt poses to a bird this small. Fresh, plain, unsalted peanuts in a small amount are generally considered acceptable, but this is a treat to be careful with rather than a casual one.
Can budgies eat peanut butter?
It is best avoided. Most peanut butter contains added salt, sugar or oils not suitable for a bird, and some brands contain xylitol, which is dangerous to many animals. Plain fresh peanuts, checked carefully, are the safer way to offer this food occasionally.
How do I know if peanuts are mouldy?
Look for any discolouration, a musty or off smell, or a fuzzy appearance, and discard anything that looks even slightly questionable rather than risk it. Buying fresh, properly stored peanuts intended for consumption is the best way to reduce this risk in the first place.
What happens if a budgie eats a mouldy peanut?
Aflatoxin poisoning can seriously affect a bird's liver and can be life-threatening even from a small amount. If you suspect your budgie has eaten a mouldy peanut, contact a vet who treats birds straight away rather than waiting to see if symptoms appear.
Are other nuts safer than peanuts for budgies?
Most nuts carry some risk of the same mould contamination, so the same caution about freshness and proper storage applies whichever nut you are considering. Small amounts of plain, fresh, unsalted nuts are generally the safer approach across the board, checked carefully every time.
