Can budgies eat fruit?

Yes, budgies can eat most fruit as an occasional treat, and many enjoy the variety alongside their main seed or pellet diet. Apple, banana, berries and melon are all commonly given, but avocado is genuinely toxic and should never be offered, and the seeds and pips of apples and stone fruit need to be removed before feeding.

Fruits that are generally safe

Apple with the core and seeds removed, banana, most berries, melon, pear and grapes cut into small pieces are all fruits commonly given to budgies as an occasional treat. They should stay a small part of the diet rather than a main food, since a budgie's everyday nutrition should come from a good-quality seed mix or pellet formulated for their needs.

Wash any fruit thoroughly before offering it to remove pesticide residue, and cut pieces small enough for a budgie to manage easily — a tiny bird doesn't need, and can't safely eat, a large chunk of anything.

Fruit to avoid entirely

Avocado is genuinely toxic to budgies and most other birds, and should never be given in any form or quantity — even a small amount can be dangerous. Apple seeds, and the pips or stones of fruit like cherries, plums and apricots, contain compounds that release cyanide when broken down and must always be removed before the flesh is offered.

Citrus fruit is sometimes given in very small amounts, but some budgies find it too acidic, so it's worth introducing cautiously and watching how your bird responds rather than assuming it's automatically fine.

How much fruit to give

A small piece a few times a week is plenty — fruit should complement a budgie's main diet, not replace any meaningful part of it, given how much of it is water and natural sugar rather than the balanced nutrition a proper seed or pellet mix provides.

Remove any uneaten fresh fruit from the cage after a few hours, since it spoils quickly and can attract mould or bacteria in a warm cage environment, which is far more of a risk to a small bird than an occasional missed treat.

Introducing new fruit

Offer a small piece of a new fruit and watch how your budgie responds before making it a regular treat, since individual birds can react differently to new foods. Some budgies take readily to fruit, while others show little interest and prefer vegetables or their usual seed mix instead.

If your budgie ever eats avocado or a fruit pip in any quantity, contact a vet with avian experience straight away rather than waiting to see if symptoms develop, since these are genuine emergencies rather than something to monitor at home.

Vegetables alongside fruit

Vegetables generally offer a better nutritional return than fruit for a budgie, being lower in sugar while still providing good variety and enrichment value, so it's worth thinking of fruit as the occasional extra and vegetables like leafy greens, carrot and pepper as the more regular addition to their seed or pellet base.

A mixed approach — mostly vegetables, with fruit offered now and then — gives a budgie the benefits of dietary variety without leaning too heavily on the sugar content that comes with fruit specifically, and keeps mealtimes interesting across the week.

Common questions

Is avocado safe for budgies?
No, avocado is toxic to budgies and should never be given in any amount. If your budgie has eaten any, contact a vet with avian experience immediately rather than waiting to see how they respond.
Can budgies eat apple seeds?
No, apple seeds contain compounds that release cyanide when broken down and should always be removed before offering apple to a budgie. The flesh itself, with the core and seeds taken out, is fine.
How much fruit should a budgie eat?
A small piece a few times a week is plenty. Fruit should stay an occasional treat alongside a proper seed or pellet-based diet, which should make up the bulk of what a budgie eats.
Can budgies eat citrus fruit?
In small amounts, some budgies tolerate citrus fine, but its acidity doesn't agree with every bird. Introduce it cautiously in a small piece first and watch how your budgie responds before offering it regularly.
