Can budgies eat courgette?

Yes, budgies can eat courgette, offered raw or lightly cooked with no seasoning, in small amounts. It is not toxic and its high water content makes it a light, low-calorie addition, though it offers relatively little nutritionally on its own, so it works best as one of a variety of vegetables rather than a food to rely on regularly.

Why courgette is fine, but not especially useful

Courgette is mostly water with only a small amount of fibre and a few vitamins, and nothing in it is toxic to budgies at the amounts a small bird would realistically eat. Its mild flavour and soft texture make it easy for many budgies to peck at, which is part of why it is a common suggestion for introducing vegetables to a seed-heavy diet.

Because it is low in most nutrients compared with darker leafy vegetables, courgette is better thought of as a variety item than a nutritional cornerstone. A rotation of different vegetables, rather than relying heavily on any one, gives a budgie a broader range of nutrients overall.

How to serve it safely

Wash the courgette and cut a small slice or piece sized for a budgie to peck at comfortably, either raw or lightly steamed with nothing added. There is no need to peel it, and the skin is perfectly fine for a budgie to eat.

Remove anything left uneaten after a few hours rather than leaving fresh vegetable in the cage, since it spoils quickly and can encourage bacteria in a small, enclosed space. Fresh food should always be an addition to, not a replacement for, a proper seed or pellet-based diet.

Introducing it for the first time

Offer a small piece the first time and watch how your budgie responds, both in terms of interest and any change in their droppings afterwards, the same as with introducing any new food to a small bird. Most budgies either take to a new vegetable quickly or largely ignore it, rather than reacting badly.

If your budgie seems unwell, stops eating their normal food, or their droppings change persistently after trying courgette or any new food, that is worth a call to a vet experienced with birds rather than continuing to experiment with their diet at home.

Courgette as part of a balanced budgie diet

A budgie's diet should be built mainly around a good-quality seed mix or pellets formulated for the species, with fresh vegetables and the occasional piece of fruit making up a smaller supporting share. Courgette fits into that supporting share alongside other budgie-safe vegetables such as radish, carrot and leafy greens, rather than replacing any of them.

Rotating a few different vegetables through the week gives a broader spread of nutrients than relying on courgette alone, given how little it offers nutritionally compared with darker, leafier options. Keep the seed or pellet mix as the main part of what your budgie eats day to day.

Common questions

Can budgies eat courgette skin?
Yes, the skin is perfectly fine for a budgie to eat and there is no need to peel it before offering a piece. Just wash it thoroughly first, the same as you would with any fresh vegetable.
Is courgette good for budgies?
It is safe rather than especially nutritious, being mostly water with only a small amount of fibre and vitamins. It works well as one vegetable among a varied rotation rather than something to rely on as a main source of nutrition.
Can budgies eat cooked courgette?
Yes, lightly steamed courgette with nothing added is fine alongside raw. Avoid any courgette cooked with oil, butter, salt or seasoning intended for people, since these are not suitable for a small bird.
How often can I give my budgie courgette?
A small piece every so often, as part of a varied rotation of vegetables, is a sensible approach. There is no need to offer it daily, and variety generally serves a budgie's nutrition better than repeating the same vegetable often.
Can courgette replace pellets or seed mix in a budgie's diet?
No. Fresh vegetables like courgette are a supplement to a budgie's main seed or pellet-based diet, not a substitute for it. A budgie fed mostly on watery vegetables like courgette would miss out on nutrients a proper seed or pellet mix is formulated to provide.
