Who makes Whiskas?
Whiskas is made by Mars Petcare, a division of the American company Mars, Incorporated, which also owns Pedigree, Royal Canin and several other well-known pet food names. Whiskas itself is a cat food brand, covering wet pouches and tins, dry food and treats, rather than making anything for dogs.
The brand's history
Whiskas traces back to Kal Kan, a pet food company founded in the United States in the 1930s, which Mars bought in the 1960s. The Whiskas name itself launched in the UK in the late 1950s, and Mars later brought its various regional cat food brands under the single Whiskas name globally, which is why the branding looks similar in different countries.
Today Whiskas sits within Mars Petcare's wider portfolio alongside Pedigree for dogs, and it remains one of the most recognisable cat food brands in UK supermarkets and pet shops.
What we stock
Our Whiskas range covers wet pouches and tins in gravy or jelly across adult, kitten and senior formulas, dry kibble for adult cats, and a line of treats including the milk-flavoured cat milk drink. It is a mainstream, widely available range rather than a specialist one, which suits an owner wanting a familiar, consistent food their cat already knows.
As with any brand, check the pack for adult, kitten or senior labelling rather than assuming one recipe suits a cat at every life stage, since the formulas differ in calorie density and nutrient balance to match.
How it compares within the shop
Whiskas sits at the mainstream, budget-to-mid-range end of the wet and dry cat food we stock, alongside more specialist brands with shorter ingredients lists or a single named protein. Neither approach is automatically better; a mainstream range with a long track record and a consistent recipe suits plenty of cats perfectly well, and a cat already happily eating it has no obvious reason to switch.
If your cat has a known sensitivity, is a fussy eater who has rejected several foods, or you are simply curious what else is out there, our wider cat food range sits alongside Whiskas rather than replacing it, so there is room to compare rather than choosing blind.

Common questions
- Is Whiskas owned by Mars?
- Yes, Whiskas is made by Mars Petcare, part of Mars, Incorporated, the same company behind Pedigree, Royal Canin and several other pet food brands sold in the UK.
- Where does the name Whiskas come from?
- The brand grew out of Kal Kan, an American pet food company Mars acquired, and Whiskas launched as a name in the UK in the late 1950s before being adopted more widely as Mars brought its regional cat food brands under one global name.
- Does Whiskas make dog food too?
- No, Whiskas is a cat food brand specifically. Mars makes dog food under separate brands, most notably Pedigree, rather than putting dog products under the Whiskas name.
- Is Whiskas suitable for kittens?
- Whiskas does make kitten-specific recipes, separate from its adult and senior ranges, and it is worth choosing the correctly labelled one rather than an adult recipe, since a kitten's nutritional needs differ from a grown cat's.
